Hummus To The Rescue!

September 29th, 2017

My hubby has toddler tendencies when it comes to eating healthy food. If it’s something he’s not sure of or is not one of his favorites (he avoids the healthy stuff…) then he wants it covered in gravy or cheese sauce. While this technique will have your brain and tummy hollering YES YES YES..your waistline and arteries will be screaming NO NO NO! Do you have anyone like this in your family? It would sometimes cause friction when I tried to implement healthy options. I’m sure you can picture the toddler meltdown complete with kicking, crying and screaming…but enough about me…

Then it was hummus to the rescue!

Creating a sauce or gravy with hummus could not be any easier. You can use the prepared stuff from the grocery store or make your own. I’m lazy and the premade stuff is made with ingredients I can pronounce so I just use that and spend the extra few minutes quilting instead of hummus-ing. All you need to do is choose a hummus flavor that you like, add a little liquid to it and heat it up. That’s it, all done!

Pictured above is a dish that I recently made. Grilled chicken served on a bed of rice with a red pepper hummus. the sauce mixes with the rice too. Yum. I heated up a 16oz. container of red pepper hummus with about 1/2 cup of water. It comes out a thick gravy consistency. A side salad and a sprinkle of Parmesan and you’re good to go.

Another recent concoction is sort of a mock Alfredo. I used a 16oz. container of garlic hummus with about 3/4-1 cup of water. I wanted it a little thinner so it would coat the pasta well. I cooked up some regular and spinach linguine, sauteed some veggies from the garden and tossed everything together. Not only did I use the abundance of our vegetable garden (there is summer squash, zucchini, carrots, beets, green beans, tomatoes and mushrooms in there) but the sauce also works to sidestep issues for our lactose free family members. Regular Alfredo tastes wonderful but is not good for lactose free folks! Aside from salting the pasta water, I didn’t add any extra spices or herbs.

Just a couple of handy notes when using hummus as a sauce or gravy…It will thicken as it cools so you want to make it slightly looser so it’s perfect by the time it reaches the table. Any leftover hummus sauce can still be used as a spread for crackers or sandwiches too.

So, let the experimentation begin! Leave a comment and tell me what flavor/food profile you discovered with hummus!

Batiks Go Retro Blog Hop

September 14th, 2017

It’s day 4 of the Batiks Go Retro blog hop where we get to show off the Batiks Go Retro line of fabric created by Tammy Silvers fabric designer for Island Batik and owner of Tamarinis.

When Tammy asked me to make something with her new fabric line, Batiks Go Retro…I said “ehh, maybe – if it fits into my schedule” (I’m such a great friend…) Then she showed me sneak-peak photos of the fabric and I saw this one…

I just had to have me some of that! I mean, just look at it. It has little 50’s style tv’s…and it’s PURPLE!!! The rest of the line was equally exciting. Well, almost…those purple tv’s are pretty darn awesome. Here are a few of the other fabrics in the line.

The whole line has a 50’s vibe to it in purple, blue, orange and teal. So now I have this little pile of cute fabrics. I know I have to make a bag of some sort and I have a tight deadline. Tammy wanted to use the samples in her booth at Quilt Market to show off her fabrics to the quilt shops. What to do…what to do…

Tote-ally Simple is born!

I made a fully padded bag to hold all the electronics we tote around with us. A zippered pocket on the back with a cute lace zipper, two pockets on the inside, magnetic closures and long straps for lugging. The front also has a full width pocket with a funky glass button as part of the closure.

Tote-ally cute, right?? I loved this project. I love this fabric line. You can check out the entire line of Batiks Go Retro on Island Batiks website or ask for it in your local shop. Then you can own your very own purple tv’s! They also have other colors of tv’s but I stopped looking… You can find the pattern for Tote-ally Simple on my website if you wish to make your own.

There are prizes to be had as well. I hear there are fabrics, patterns, thread…there is some great talent here so I know we’ll all come up with some great stuff for the prize box! You can enter at each stop of the blog hop for your chance at prizes. Just click here to enter over at Rafflecopter.

Fiesta de Azucar – Border Option #2, Marigolds & Bones

September 1st, 2017

So, has everyone enjoyed all the blocks so far? Nine different blocks by nine awesome designers! In case you missed any of them check out the links below. You can also search Craftsy for Fiesta de Azucar and you can find them all. Now it’s time for a border…don’t ya think?

I remember getting ready for Dia de Los Muertos celebrations as a kid and one of my favorite parts was making the Papel Picado. That’s the tissue paper flags. You make them by folding and cutting – similar to the snowflakes we all made as kids. They can be quite intricate but I opted for a simpler and more “homey” look to my flags. I also wanted to include marigolds (the traditional flower) and some skeleton parts. So, that’s what my border design is all about. Marigolds & Bones.

The instructions are for a full accompaniment of the nine blocks. You can easily pick and choose the different elements to make a table runner with just a couple of skulls or a small wall hanging with a single skull. So without further ado…here is the quilt…

I hope you enjoy the border. I can’t wait to see what you do with your creations! There will be one more border option next week then you have until 10/30/17 to post pictures of your project for a chance at our fabulous prizes!
