The Binding Tool Tutorial:

The following is a photo tutorial on how to use the binding tool. Many folks have trouble with the final bias seam when applying their binding. It comes out too short, too long or there is a twist in the tail. This tool helps to eliminate those problems.

Note: all photos can be clicked on for a larger view. Most Binding Tools come with a protective film (clear, blue, white - they keep changing...) that should be removed before use.

Step 1:

Leave a 12" opening in the binding and leave about 10-12" tails on both sides. Always make sure the tool is right side up (you can read the printed words.)

Step 2:

Butt the end of the tool against the left side of the opening and lay the left binding tail across the tool. Make a mark on your binding aligned with the line on the tool labeled "mark here".

Step 3:

Spin the tool around and repeat for the right side using the same "mark here" line. Try to keep the tool flat - don't lift and turn. If you accidentally turn it over you'll have problems later.

Step 4:

Open the tail on the left side and align the "L" edge of the tool with the mark you made earlier. Make sure the long edges of the tool are even with the edges of your binding tail. Using your rotary cutter, cut the bias edge and the little dog ear corner.

Step 5:

Repeat for the right side except align the "R" line (also the mark here line) with your previous mark. Using your rotary cutter, cut the bias edge and the little dog ear corner.

Step 6:

Place the right tail on top of the left tail (right sides together) and align all edges. Because you have already clipped the dog ears, everything should fit perfectly together. Sew 1/4" seam, press open and VIOLA...perfection!

Step 7:

Sew binding down to quilt across 12" opening. All done!
